Apart from the recession, what has killed the original music company model That’s right – the Internet. Think about how most people enjoy their music today.
Let’s look at how the different demographics purchase (or not) their music now.
First the older age group (I am thinking 50 plus – don’t be offended if you fit into this bracket.)
If they don’t have an iPod or other MP3 player (many do) they are restricting their music spending as the entertainment opportunities are so much more varied than they were 20 years ago when they bought CDs release after release by their favourite artists. Add into this tough times and what is one of the first luxury items to go out the window Music. Particularly when they can borrow a friends purchase and simply copy it onto a disc on their basic computer setup.
